Tahini Sauce Recipe

Tahini Sauce Recipe

“This tahini sauce goes well with your falafel, falafel wrap, fresh and roasted vegetables, flatbread or toasted pita wedges or as salad dressing. A go to sauce for most of your Middle Eastern dish!”

Many would be unfamiliar with tahini sauce. I myself was not familiar with this sauce when I was in the Philippines. But when I stayed in UAE, I’ve learn to like it as well. You probably wouldn’t appreciate it at first, but would like it eventually as it adds flavor to most of the cuisine being sold here in UAE.

This tahini sauce is very easy to do at home and would take around 5 minutes. It adds irresistible creaminess and flavor to anything it touches, be it fresh or roasted vegetables, salad, falafel, flatbread or pita bread.

What is Tahini

Tahini is common in Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cooking. Tahini is a super creamy, rich vegan paste made by finely grinding roasted sesame seeds until buttery smooth. Although it taste a bit nutty but it is actually not a “nut butter” as sesame seeds come from plant family that is not closely related to nut-producing trees.

A good tahini should taste mildly nutty and savory and it should also be rich and smooth. On the other hand, bad tahini tastes bitter.

Tips in making the tahini sauce

When making a tahini sauce, it is important to choose a high quality brand that uses only one ingredient – sesame seeds, look in their label.

Just mix all ingredients together. Adjust consistency depending on how you’re using the tahini sauce. As a dipping sauce, use less water to keep it thick and creamy. If using as a sauce to add to sandwich or salads, add more water for a thinner consistency. You may want to adjust the salt as well for overall flavor, and/or more lemon juice for more tang. It all depends on your desired consistency and taste.

If you don’t have garlic powder, you can crush a fresh garlic clove and marinate it with lemon juice for 10 minutes. Strain the garlic to ensure a smooth tahini sauce.

For a more healthy variation, you can add herbs to make your sauce. Herbs like parsley, basil, cilantro, mint or dill.

You can make this tahini sauce ahead of time, store in an airtight container for up to 3 days in the refrigerator.

Try making and using this sauce to light up your vegetables, salads or sandwich. Happy tummy!
