What is beef with broccoli

As the name suggest, this dish is mainly composed of beef and broccoli. The beef is marinated so that the flavor will seep into the meat. Then the broccoli and meat are stir fried individually to create a vibrantly looking dish.

Beef with broccoli marinade

Marinade sauce composed of oyster sauce, liquid seasoning (or soy sauce), sesame oil, sugar and baking soda. This gives out the lovely sauce that coats the beef and broccoli and kind of bind them together.

Marinating the beef is optional but highly recommended. Although you can put them together when cooking, marinating them allows the flavor to penetrate the beef. Making the beef more tender and flavorful.

How to cook beef with broccoli stir fry

In a pan, sauté garlic until slightly browned then add the broccoli florets. Stir fry until tender-crisp. Remove the vegetables from the pan and set aside.

Cook the beef until it is browned, you may want to add little water until beef becomes tender.

Once the meat is tender and the sauce reduced, return the vegetables to the pan. Stir fry for a couple of minutes and transfer to a serving plate.

Sprinkle with sesame seeds for added texture and flavor.

Tips in cooking beef and broccoli

  • For best result, use a well-marbled tender cut of meat. Ribeye, sirloin, and tenderloin are the most popular cuts. Because of the high fat content in the flesh, the ribeye has a deep flavor and is juicy. Sirloin features leaner meat than ribeye, but it’s not as delicious. The tenderloin, like the sirloin, has a low fat content but is an incredibly tender cut with a milder flavor.
  • Freeze the beef before cutting. Same like my tip in my Korean Beef Bulgogi recipe. This is a wonderful method for cutting meat into thin slices quickly. Wrap each fillet in cling wrap and place in the freezer for 2 to 2 1/2 hours to partly freeze the meat. If your knife glides through the meat effortlessly and you have no trouble thinly slicing it, it’s ready. If you do, return the meat to the freezer and freeze it for a few more minutes. Thinly slice the meat, ideal thickness is about 1/8 inch.
  • Substitute an Asian pear to your marinade. Instead of using sugar and baking soda to sweeten and tenderize the meat, you can use Asian pear to give the same result.
  • Marinade the beef for a flavorful meat. I cannot emphasize how I recommend this step. It really makes a difference on the flavor of the dish.

Recipe Variations

This dish is great as is, but you can easily change up the ingredients to suit your preferences.

Protein: Ground beef, sliced chicken breast, shrimp, pork tenderloin, or cubed tofu can be substituted for beef.

Vegetables: Sliced carrots, bok choy, mushrooms, snow peas, bell peppers, or baby corn are all good additions. Aside from additional nutrition, they adds color too.

Add-Ins: For a little heat, add sriracha or chili garlic oil. You can also add cashews for texture aside from the sesame seeds.

How to serve

You can serve this beef with broccoli as it is. Or as Filipinos do, we serve it with steaming rice or noodles instead. If calorie conscious, you can also partner it with cauliflower rice.
