WHAT ARE DEVILED EGGS

Deviled eggs also known as stuffed eggs or dressed eggs, are hard-boiled eggs that have been shelled, split in half, and stuffed with a filling made from egg yolks mixed with other ingredients such as mayonnaise, mustard, salt and pepper (classic). These stuffed eggs are typically served cold as a side dish, appetizer or as a main entrée during gatherings or parties.

The term deviled egg is derived from an 18th-century culinary term that was originally used by the Oxford English Dictionary to denote a highly seasoned fried or boiled dish. This was then expanded to encompass spicy, condiment-laden foods as well. It was eventually adopted as a term for eggs.

According to history, deviled eggs may be traced all the way back to ancient Rome, when eggs were cooked, seasoned with spicy sauces, and served as an appetizer.

INGREDIENTS FOR DEVILED EGGS WITH RELISH

This recipe requires few simple ingredients, here are:

ingredients in making deviled eggs
  • Eggs. Use large eggs for the optimal satisfaction.
  • Mayonnaise. Adds a creamy richness to the dish.
  • Mustard.  Creates that tanginess which is great to balance the flavors.
  • Sweet pickle relish and pickle juice. Lends a lovely sweetness and texture to the dish.
  • Salt, black pepper to perfectly balance the taste.
  • Garnish. Paprika (classic), or chopped dill, parley or chives.

HOW TO MAKE DEVILED EGGS WITH RELISH

Follow these steps to make an easy and scrumptious deviled eggs with relish.

Using a medium saucepan, place the eggs in a single layer and add enough cold water to cover them by 1 inch.

Bring the water to a rolling boil about 10 minutes. Cover and remove the pan from the heat. Set it aside for 7 minutes. Drain the eggs and place them in cold water to cool. After 2-3 minutes, remove water and replace with another cold water to cool completely.  I am removing the first water because it will become warm as it absorbs the heat from the eggs. The second cold water is what will make the eggs cool down completely.

Side note. In this step, other people are using ice water/bath to stop the eggs from cooking further. But in my case, I don’t use this method. Why? First, I don’t have ice available at home and second, I’m just lazy to do it. Hahaha But you are feel free to do whatever best suit you.

Next, is to peel the eggs and split them in half, lengthwise. Scoop out the yolks with care using a teaspoon and place them into a medium mixing bowl. Place egg whites on a separate plate.

Mash yolks with a fork until creamy and smooth. Then add all the remaining ingredients and taste.

Place egg yolk filling in a piping bag with big star tip and pipe into each egg white cavity until fully stuffed. You can also use an ice cream scoop or tablespoon if preferred.

Chill and sprinkle with paprika or any of your preferred toppings before serving.

TIPS IN MAKING THE DEVILED EGGS

  • Make sure your yolks are completely cooked.
  • For quick whipping, combine all of the ingredients for the yolk filling except the pickles in a food processor or hand mixer and process until smooth, then fold in the relish.
  • Use a piping bag with big star tip in piping the filling for a mess free and beautiful presentation.
  • Use smoked or sweet paprika for a more traditional flavor. Alternatively, you can sprinkle flaky sea salt, sriracha, pickled jalapenos, pickled onions, bacon, feta cheese, or fresh herbs like dill, parsley or chives to brighten things up a little.
  • You can cook an extra egg and use the yolk (but not the whites) to add a little more filling to make them look more stuffed.

ARE DEVILED EGGS KETO FRIENDLY

Keto-friendly deviled eggs are made with simply mayonnaise and yellow mustard. So if you are on low carb or keto diet, you can omit the sweet pickle relish to make a classic deviled eggs.

Or you can use dill pickle relish instead of the sweet pickle relish called for in this recipe if you’re preparing deviled eggs with relish.

MAKE AHEAD

Fully prepared deviled eggs with relish can be made one day ahead of time. Also, if you’re going to add any crunchy garnishes to your deviled egg mixture, do so shortly before serving.

You can also pre-boil your eggs ahead up to 5 days before your party to save you time. Simply store them in an airtight jar until ready to whip up.

Another make ahead tip is that, 2 days before your celebration, you can prepare the egg whites and yolk filling separately. Wrap the egg white halves tightly in plastic wrap and store the egg yolk filling in a resealable plastic bag with the air squeezed out. Assemble the day you need them.

HOW TO SERVE

These deviled eggs with relish will be great as appetizer on any occasion. You can garnish them with any preferred toppings to make them special and to add more flavor. Or leave them plain as they are delicious as they are.
